Even if bloodless, laser resurfacing is a surgical techniques, there are still risk. The risk of Hypo (under) and hyper (excess) pigmentation are probably significantly less than with traditional resurfacing, but still exist.
Creams are prescribed to help reduce these risks. Infection can occur, and since skin infections most commonly result from bacteria residing in the skin, antibiotics are routinely used for several days after surgery.
Viral infection from the cold sore virus can also be re-activated. Because many of us have the virus even if we do not get cold sores, an anti-viral medication is also used routinely. Beginning two days prior to the precedure and continuing fro several days afterwards. If a cold sore does appear prior to the surgery, the surgery date should be postponed.
