Is Eyelid Surgery Right For You?

If you are planning to have any kind of surgery it is advisable to make a research about the procedure the the things your should know if a certain surgery procedure is right for you. There are things that you shoudl consider before having an Eyelid surgery to avoid complication before and after the surgery.

Not all problems in the lower lids can be corrected. Dark circles under the eyes cannot be elimib=nated, although some of the discoloured skin can be removed. Sometimes the operation must be necessity be more conservative to prevent problems with the functioning of the lids.

The result of blepharoplasty may last for more than five years; for some people, it will be permanent. Eyelida surgery can be done alone or in conjunction with other facial surgery. Some surgeons believe the results are more long-lasting if done with a brow-lift. Crow's feet and other wrinkles around the eyes cannot be removed by blepharoplasty and require a min-facelift.

Most people undergoing eyelid surgery are between the ages of 35 and 50. It is often the first facial cosmetic surgery people consider; many go on later to have other facial procedures. More and more men are now seeking blepharoplasty, and it is now the third most popular cosmetic procedure for men, after hair transplants and rhinoplasty.

There are number of health conditions that could rule out eyelid surgery. Two are thyroid problems:hypothyroidisn (low glandular activity) and hyperthyroidisn (increase glandular activity, called Graves disease or thytoxicosis). Hypothyroidism casuse the eyelids to become waterlogged, something that cannot be corrected with surgery. Graves' disease causes the eyelids to swell, and the eyes may also bulge; surgery worsens the bulging and increases the "dry-eye" symptoms.

Other conditions that may also prelude you from having eyelid surgery are detached retinas, glaucoma or a condition in which your eyes do not produce enough tears. The cornea lacks its own blood supply and dries out easily; particularly after blepharoplasty, and without proper lubrication, can become ulcerated. Before surgery, your tear production may ne measured by placing a small piece of specially treated paper inside the lower lids. If tear production is low, the surgeon may ask for additional tests from an ophthalmologist.

The blood vessels in the back of the eyes are highly sensitive, which also rules out eyelid surgery for anyone with hypertension or other circulatory problems, cardiovascular diesease or diabetes. As with other facial-surgery procedures, if you are a smoker you will be asked to stop smoking one or two weeks before and after the operation.
